DRAGON QUEST V REVIEW
Dragon Quest V (what would be known as Dragon Warrior V if it had been released in the U.S.) is the fifth game in the Dragon Quest series, this time released on the Super Famicom in Japan. Recently, an English translation having been made, we in America have been able to enjoy this game for the first time. A Playstation remake of the game was made along with Dragon Warrior IV in the 3D Dragon Warrior VII style, however, it was only released in Japan AGAIN. So you'll have to use the ROM, an SNES emulator, and the aforementioned English translation.
The graphics are rather simplistic, and the gameplay is classic Dragon Warrior with a few differences. Besides human characters who join the party, once you acquire a wagon you can recruit certain monsters who have their own special abilities. You can have several with you at once in the wagon, although you can have only three characters in the party at a time, if you have access to the wagon you may, during battle even, switch out a character for another. This makes for a far more dynamic party and strategy than before, when you would have only three, four, or five characters who did not change. There are a few sidequests, such as the Casino and the Medal King, and strange being who will trade Tiny Medals hidden throughout the world for fabulous items. The game is also very long and involving, with many dungeons and enemies to defeat.
Returning to a regular style of story rather than the chapter style presented in Dragon Warrior IV, this game's story is concerned with the main character and his father, just now returned from a long journey in search of the Legendary Hero. Papas, your father and a mighty warrior, is called to the kingdom of Reinhart to challenge people threatening to kidnap the young prince of the kingdom. Disaster strikes, however, when Papas and the main character stumble upon the kidnappers, a demonic force. Papas gives his life to save yours, with his last words asking you to continue the quest to find the Legendary Hero, and also another, more personal quest--"your mother...she still lives..."
So begins your journey, from the slave of a strange cult to the the journeys of a wanderer to a sailor on the seas of fate, a journey spanning the globe and three generations of heroes.
